History
The short history of the ArtAbilitation international conference is that it was inaugurated in Esbjerg, Denmark in September 2006 when supporting the ICDVRAT in celebrating its tenth anniversary. Selected authors from this inaugural event published their papers in the Routledge International Journal Digital Creativity, Volume 18 Issue 2.

In 2007 the second ArtAbilitation conference supported the 17th International Conference for Artificial Reality & Telexistence (ICAT). ICAT is the oldest international conference on Virtual Reality and the hosting in Esbjerg, Denmark was the first time the event has been held outside Asia Pacific. ICAT is organised by the Virtual Reality Society of Japan (VRSJ). ICAT 2006 was at Zhejiang University of Technology, China
Archives of ICAT2007 are online at IEEE. The first international symposium ‘Ludic Engagement Designs for All’ supported.

The 3rd ArtAbilitation Conference was held alongsideICDVRAT 2008 in Maia, Portugal 8-10 September . An extra special session on Music was hosted at Casa da Musica, Porto on 11th September. This was followed by the 2nd symposium on Art, Brain and languages, hosted in Casa da Musica Porto, 11th and 12th September. This conference combines various areas of knowledge such as Neuropsychology, Musical Sciences, Theatrical Arts, Arts Therapy and Linguistics, among others. It aims a holistic and interdisciplinary approach to education, disability, and rehabilitation. It intends to question how the inter-related practice and processing of different types of language (musical, psychomotor, verbal, technological, and aesthetics) can contribute to enhance interventions in education and disability (motor, verbal or mental).
Selected papers from the conference are archived online for gratis access

Around the world an estimated 600 million people live with disabilities**. Many of these people have limited fun experiences through a traditional understanding of potentials. This limited understanding is a restriction to their creative expression and/or playful interaction attributes which can offer instances of achievements and motivation that can transfer across to other life issues. New affordable commercially available tools to supplement traditional therapeutic practices are growing in use (e.g. Wii). Alternative use of other tools utilised in other disciplines are also available. Through utilization such tools new opportunities for improved live quality in daily activities can result. Practitioners from the field of rehabilitation who apply their knowledge and expertise through such tools are very welcome to tell their stories.

ArtAbilitation is affiliated with the International Society for Virtual Rehabilitation. ISVR members will receive discounted registration for ISVR affiliated conferences:
